What NOT to do

  • Don't use a coat hanger or DIY slim jim. Modern cars have shields, sensors, and airbags in the doors — improvised tools can damage wiring or trigger the airbag, turning a quick opening into an expensive repair.
  • Don't break a window. Replacing a window costs far more than a locksmith visit, and you'll be driving around with a bag over the window until it's fixed.
  • Don't force the lock with a screwdriver. You'll destroy the lock cylinder and still be locked out.

A note about cost
